Aaliyah Maxwell is an Associate Lawyer at Schofield Macchia. She brings a deep understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable and racialized communities within downtown Toronto and is committed to advocating for individuals navigating the criminal justice system.
Ms. Maxwell graduated from the University of Toronto with High Distinction, earning an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Sociolegal Studies. She subsequently completed a Master of Arts in Criminology at the University of Toronto, where her research focused on systemic deficiencies including over-policing, sentencing disparities, and differential treatment of racialized individuals. She then went on to obtain her Juris Doctor from Queen’s University Faculty of Law.
Throughout law school, Ms. Maxwell worked at respected criminal defence firms in downtown Toronto, gaining experience in appellate advocacy, and wrongful conviction matters. While at Queen’s Law, Ms. Maxwell served as a caseworker with the Queen’s Prison Law Clinic, where she assisted counsel with Supreme Court matters, represented federal inmates in disciplinary court trials, and assisted clients in preparing for parole hearings before the Parole Board of Canada. As part of her work with the Clinic, she regularly attended Collins Bay Institution and Millhaven Institution.
After completing her law degree, Ms. Maxwell articled with Schofield Macchia and subsequently joined the firm as an Associate Lawyer. She has gained extensive experience managing her own files and working closely with Ms. Schofield and Ms. Macchia on a wide range of criminal matters, including bail hearings, sentencing hearings, pre-trial motions, and trials.
